Background & Career
Nitish Kumar was born on 1 March 1951 in Bakhtiyarpur, in present-day Patna district, Bihar. He studied engineering at Bihar College of Engineering, Patna, now NIT Patna. He became involved in politics during the JP movement of the 1970s and subsequently developed his political career through socialist political organizations. He entered the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1985 and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989. He served in the Union government, including as Railway Minister, before becoming Chief Minister of Bihar. His first term as Chief Minister began in March 2000, followed by several further terms from 2005 onward. The Bihar government's official record lists his Chief Ministerial periods through 14 April 2026. He is currently a former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha member.
