History
Rashtriya Janata Dal was established on 5 July 1997 under the leadership of Lalu Prasad Yadav after separating from the Janata Dal. The party's stated political principles include social justice, secularism, socialism, equality and democratic values. Bihar has remained the party's principal political base. RJD became a major political force in Bihar during the late 1990s and 2000s. It participated in Bihar governments and also played a role in national politics, including participation in the United Progressive Alliance government from 2004. In Bihar, RJD later became a major component of the Mahagathbandhan alliance. The party's current official leadership lists Lalu Prasad Yadav as National President and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav as National Working President.
